How TapScore Works

TapScore evaluates your app’s ASO by analyzing various aspects of your app’s store presence and assigning a score out of 100. The score is broken down into three main categories, each focusing on specific optimization factors that impact your app’s discoverability and conversion rate.

Scoring System

TapScore uses a 100-point scoring system divided into three main categories:
  • Metadata (45%): Text content that helps users find and understand your app
  • Visuals (35%): Screenshots and videos that showcase your app
  • Other (20%): Conversion factors and technical requirements
Your overall TapScore is displayed as a percentage out of 100, and each category is also scored individually. Categories are rated as:
  • Great (80-100): Excellent optimization
  • Good (60-79): Good optimization with room for improvement
  • Fair (40-59): Basic optimization, significant improvements possible
  • Poor (0-39): Needs substantial optimization work

What Gets Evaluated

Metadata

The metadata category evaluates how well you’re using text fields to optimize your app’s discoverability: Apple App Store:
  • App Name: How effectively you’re using the 30-character limit
  • Subtitle: Whether you have a subtitle and how well you’re utilizing the space
  • Keywords: Keyword field utilization, proper formatting, and avoiding duplicates
  • Description: How well you’re using the 4000-character description limit
  • Promotional Text: Presence and utilization of promotional text
  • What’s New: How detailed your update notes are
Google Play:
  • App Title: Character utilization within the 30-character limit
  • Short Description: Presence and utilization of the 80-character short description
  • Full Description: Character and word count optimization for the full description

Visuals

The visuals category evaluates your app’s visual presentation:
  • Screenshots: Number of screenshots (up to 10 maximum)
  • Videos: Presence of app preview videos, quantity, and optimal length (15-30 seconds)

Other Factors

Apple App Store:
  • Review Response Rate: How actively you’re responding to user reviews
  • In-App Purchases: Whether you’re promoting in-app purchases if your app has them
  • Category Selection: Whether you’ve selected a secondary category
  • Technical Requirements: Valid support and privacy policy URLs
Google Play:
  • Engagement Factors: Various engagement metrics that impact your app’s performance

How Scores Are Calculated

TapScore analyzes your app’s current store listing by fetching data directly from the App Store or Google Play. Each factor is evaluated based on:
  • Presence: Whether required or recommended elements are present
  • Utilization: How effectively you’re using available character limits and space
  • Best Practices: Following platform-specific optimization guidelines
  • Completeness: Ensuring all important fields are filled out
The scoring algorithm considers industry best practices and platform-specific recommendations to determine how well your app is optimized compared to top-performing apps.

Viewing Your TapScore

When you view your TapScore in the dashboard, you’ll see:
  • Overall Score: A circular gauge showing your total score as a percentage out of 100
  • Category Breakdown: Each category (metadata, visuals, other) displayed with:
    • Its individual score out of 100
    • A color-coded progress bar
    • A quality badge (Great/Good/Fair/Poor)
Scores are calculated automatically when you run an audit. You can start a new audit at any time to get an updated score based on your current store listing.

Platform Differences

TapScore evaluates apps differently for Apple App Store and Google Play because each platform has different requirements and optimization opportunities:
  • Apple App Store: Focuses on keywords, subtitles, and conversion factors like review responses
  • Google Play: Emphasizes description optimization and engagement metrics
Your score is calculated separately for each platform, so an app published on both stores will have two distinct TapScores.

Improving Your Score

To improve your TapScore:
  1. Review your category breakdowns to see which areas need the most work
  2. Focus on categories marked as “Poor” or “Fair” first for the biggest impact
  3. Ensure all metadata fields are filled out and optimized
  4. Add screenshots and videos if you’re missing them
  5. Respond to user reviews regularly
  6. Run a new audit after making changes to see your updated score
We’re constantly refining our scoring algorithm based on the latest ASO research and platform updates to ensure TapScore provides the most accurate and actionable insights for optimizing your app’s store presence.
